JUNE Mar Fajardo is determined to make up for lost time and catch up with the preparations of Gilas Pilipinas in the Fiba Basketball World Cup.
Fajardo on Tuesday night attended his first practice with the national team since San Miguel won the PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals against TNT recently. In the process, the five-time MVP had to skip the Beermen’s victory party at the company headquarters on Tuesday.
Fajardo admitted it’s not easy coming off a championship conquest to going back to training for the national team is such short of a time.
“Ginagawa ko ‘yung best ko para maka-recover agad,” said Fajardo on Wednesday during the Gilas sendoff at the Meralco compound. “Kapag down time, kapag nasa bahay ako, kumakain ako ng marami, maraming prutas, tapos tulog. Ginagawa ko best ko para maka-recover.”
The five-time PBA MVP also said he will also look to catch up with his teammates as far as building relationships is concerned. Due to the Commissioner’s Cup finals, Fajardo as well as TNT players Troy Rosario and RR Pogoy were unable to join Gilas Pilipinas in the training camp in Spain.
“Magkasama naman kami since hindi naman kami bago. Matagal na kami magkakasama pero iba pa rin ‘yung kasama kami sa training camp. Wala tayong magagawa doon. Itatry namin ‘yung best namin para maka-catch up sa bonding ng team,” said Fajardo.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Fajardo said he is doing his best since it’s rare for a player to get another opportunity to play for the country in the Fiba Basketball World Cup.
“Halos buong taon na ako naglalaro pero kailangan ko maglaro eh kasi kailangan i-cherish ‘yung moment na nasa Gilas pa ako,” said Fajardo, who is aiming to make it to the final 12 of Gilas Pilipinas in the World Cup for the second time.
“Alam naman natin na hindi tayo habambuhay na maglalaro dito. Habang malakas pa tayo, maglaro tayo,” said the 29-year-old Fajardo.
