JUAN Gomez de Liano scored the marginal lay-up in the endgame as Gilas cadets beat University of the East, 63-61, on Tuesday night in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup.
Gomez de Liano’s lay-up completed a brave comeback from 11 points down and enabled the struggling Gilas cadets to claim just their second win in seven outings in the preseason tournament.
Abu Tratter had 13 points while Kobe Paras tallied 11 points for Gilas, who also played with Kai Sotto for the first time since being formed as a pool for the 2023 Fiba World Cup.
“We had three tough games. We lost in the end. It’s good that we come out as winners in this game,” said Gilas cadets coach Jong Uichico.
Alvin Pasaol had 22 points for the Red Warriors, who failed to hold on to a 61-50 lead after being held to four points in the fourth quarter - and without a basket in the final nine minutes of game.
“Ang hirap naman na ‘yung we lost but we kinda dominated the game, and just lost it in the end because we couldn’t shoot the ball and we couldn’t defend. At least now, we can shoot the ball and we can defend,” Uichico said.
Sotto made his presence felt late in the fourth, scoring on a follow-up dunk to cut the deficit to three before tying the game at 61-all with a split from the line with 5:24 left to play.
Both teams were unable to score before Gilas finally had a breakthrough with Gomez de Liano scoring a fastbreak lay-up.
Philip Manalang missed a jumper in UE’s final possession as the Red Warriors dropped to 1-2.
