THE coach of the Jordan national team accused Yeng Guiao of crossing the line, claiming the Team Pilipinas mentor cursed his players during their tune-up match at the Meralco gym on Wednesday night.
Coach Joey Stiebing added Guiao even called his players names during the ill-tempered match which was called off with Team Pilipinas leading, 82-73.
“I’m disappointed from a coaching standpoint when an opposing coach curses your players,” said Stiebing just as Jordan was about to leave the playing venue.
“I just think it’s unprofessional. I’m a coach. I would never talk to another player. I would never curse at them,” he added. “In our profession, we need to teach our kids the right way to act.”
Guiao, for his part, accused Jordan of 'bullying us all the way.'
Stiebing and Guiao already figured in a heated exchange of words in the second quarter. He asked his Team Pilipinas counterpart not to talk to his players during that exchange, the Jordan coach claimed.
“And then he did it again. Because I have players before that when a coach curses at them, they will go after him and start a fight,” he said.
The American, who was the former coach of Qatar, said the team just decided not to proceed playing to prevent any untoward incident from happening.
I just felt that if we continue the game something bad would happen. And I didn’t want to see that happen,” he said. “If us get into the fight, I don’t think that would have been a good thing for either team.”
The Jordan mentor likewise regretted saying something to Guiao just before the game was called off. The Filipino coach later disclosed that Stiebing told him that he’s ‘going to take my ass.’
“I told the coach something that I shouldn’t have said,” said Stiebing. “But I didn’t curse at him. It was just in the heat of the battle.”
