GILAS Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes said Jordan Clarkson is scheduled to arrive on August 15 to join the national team in its preparation for the next window in the Fiba Basketball World Cup Asia qualifiers.
Reyes said Gilas is now in the process of forming a team around the former NBA Sixth Man of the Year after he committed to play for the national team in World Cup qualifiers against Lebanon and Saudi Arabia next month.
“He has made himself available. He said he can come in and practice starting August 15,” said Reyes.
Reyes, however, cautioned that Clarkson playing for Gilas will not be 100 percent sure “until he is actually here.”
“We cannot really be a hundred percent. But right now, we are planning with him in the line-up. We are putting together a line-up with Jordan Clarkson part of the line-up,” said the many-time PBA Coach of the Year.
If the trip pushes through, the Philippines' games against Lebanon on August 25 and against Saudi Arabia on August 29 will be the Utah Jazz guard's first with Gilas since the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.
Reyes said the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and team manager Butch Antonio are already arranging Clarkson’s arrival in the country.
“I know that SBP is talking to his representative, his agent, his management team to fix all the logistics to allow him to come in and play," said Reyes. "It’s not that simple. Maraming issues involved. But that’s where we are right now. He said he made himself available. Now we are doing all we can to make it happen.”
Reyes said Clarkson’s participation will be a boost to the fans who would want to see him in action. Gilas is the designated home team in the Saudi Arabia match.
“It would be great for the Filipino people to watch Jordan play for the national team here in the Philippines,” said Reyes.
