BOCAUE, Bulacan — Janine Pontejos is on pace to reach the finals of the Fiba 3x3 World Cup shootout side event after emerging as the leader in the women’s qualifier at the Philippine Arena on Sunday.
Pontejos scored six two-pointers in 22 seconds to take the lead in the qualifier, with Jiaying Jiang of China placing second among 10 players in Day Three of the competition with six in 30 seconds.
The final day of the qualifiers will be on Monday where 10 more women’s competitors will look to get into the finals.
The two players in the men’s and women’s division who scored the most points in the shortest time will advance to the finals. The four then compete against each other in the final.
Prior to the shootout, Pontejos was fresh from her 13-point performance in the Philippines’ 17-21 loss to Spain in which she five two-pointers.
