BOCAUE — Janine Pontejos has become a fan favorite at the Fiba 3x3 World Cup at the Philippine Arena.
Pontejos was red-hot from the outside in the Philippines’ final two elimination-round games on Sunday, with a combined seven two-pointers, five against Spain.
The 25-year-old Pontejos also shone in the shootout, nailing six to take the early lead in the race for two slots in the finals.
“Lumakas ‘yung loob ko sa crowd kasi ’yung sigawan nila, nakakataas ng energy,” said Pontejos, whose name became a trending topic on Twitter.
Unfortunately, Perlas Pilipinas ended up winless in the Philippines’ first-ever campaign in the Fiba 3x3 World Cup.
“Nagpapasalamat ako especially kay coach Pat na na-lineup ako dito. Maraming players na magagaling pero sinama niya ako sa mga players niya. Nagpapasalamat ako sa SBP na sinuportahan kami at sa mga supporters namin,” said Pontejos, a product of Centro Escolar University.
Pontejos also said the experience will definitely be a boost for her career.
“Dun ko siguro nakuha ’yung kumpiyansa ko na tumira tapos with my teammates na tiwala sila na ma-shoot ’yung tira ko,” said Pontejos.
