JAKARTA – James Yap’s stellar play in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup has appeared to rub off in the 2018 Asian Games.
In his first game back from international play, Yap tallied 12 points and six rebounds in the Philippines’ 96-59 win over Kazakhstan on Thursday at the start of its campaign in the men’s basketball tournament.
The 36-year-old cager turned back the hands of time with his solid play in his first international play since the 2009 Fiba Asia Championship, but said it was a total team effort on the part of the squad.
“Siyempre masarap,” Yap said. “Excited kami lahat. Talagang nagtulungan kami para manalo tayo.”
The Philippine squad showed brilliance on offense with Yap along with three others scoring in double figures. Yap, however, said it was the defense that got them the win.
Yap also had his share of defensive gems as he had one steal and one block.
“Actually, hindi namin ineexpect,” Yap said, referring to the win in lopsided fashion. “Binigay namin ‘yung best namin. Tulungan kami sa defense. Nag-work at buti na lang nanalo today.”
