YENG Guiao is open to holding more tune-up games of Team Pilipinas in different venues to reach out to more fans.
On Friday night, the Philippine squad held its tune-up game against Lebanon at the Epsilon Chi Center inside the University of the Philippines campus. The hosts lost, 74-68, in front of a good-sized crowd that included UP players Juan Gomez de Liano and Will Gozum.
The tune-up is part of Team Pilipinas' preparation for the fifth window of the Fiba Basketball World Cup Asian qualifiers where they will play Kazakhstan on November 30 and Iran on December 3.
Guiao said he is happy with the turnout, and is encouraged to hold future Team Pilipinas tuneup games in venues other than the Meralco gym.
“Actually, the reception is really good. Kung sa Meralco lang tayo, hindi tayo nakakabigay ng opportunity sa ibang fans. Sayang naman,” Guiao said.
“Now we have a different set of people watching the game. Pag nasa Meralco tayo, parang ‘yung audience, ‘yun din eh. Nakakabuti rin naman ito para sa mga fans,” Guiao said.
Guiao said the Epsilon Chi fraternity, which counts the concurrent NLEX coach as a member, requested that one of the tune-up games be held at the new UP gym that is being used by the Fighting Maroons.
Guiao happily obliged.
“We just wanted to treat the UP community to a good game here. This is a new gym. It’s part of our reaching out to the different sectors of the basketball fans. Here of course, we have students," he said.
“I also played for this school and this gym is a legacy project of our fraternity. We wanted to just give some help and promote the facility. Maganda naman,” said Guiao.
