RAIN or Shine players aren’t the only ones savoring a reunion with their former head coach.
James Yap also relished a reunion with his former coach at Purefoods, Ryan Gregorio, during the first day of practice of the Philippine team bound for the 2018 Asian Games.
Although Gregorio’s role in the team has yet to be made official, the multi-titled coach was seen on the court along with the rest of the staff of head coach Yeng Guiao and chief assistant Caloy Garcia.
Nevertheless, Yap was happy to see Gregorio during Monday night’s practice.
“’Yan ‘yung isa sa mga gumawa ng pangalan na James Yap eh,” said Yap. “Masaya na kasama siya sa national team. Mahaba-habang kwentuhan ‘yun.”
It was Gregorio who coached Yap during his heyday with the Purefoods franchise - a time that saw Yap win his two MVP awards in 2006 and 2010.
Incidentally, Yap was still being coached by Gregorio when he suited up for the national team in the 2009 Fiba Asia Championship, the last time the current Rain or Shine cager played for the Philippine squad.
Yap said Gregorio was happy to see him back with the national team at age 36.
“Actually, masaya rin siya na nakita niya ako dito. Sinabihan niya lang ako na I’m sure excited ka. Pakundisyon lang at ready lang,” said Yap.
