TWO members of the new Gilas Pilipinas pool are in favor of having teenager Kai Sotto for the coming Fiba World Cup.
Barangay Ginebra center Greg Slaughter said he welcomes Sotto’s inclusion to the national pool as it will be beneficial to the Ateneo Blue Eaglets center to his development.
“It’s great. The earlier, the better for him,” said Slaughter. “There are a lot of guys that are willing to help him along the way. He has a promising career. I’m excited to practice with him.”
Sotto has been included in the 20-man pool of Team Pilipinas for the coming window against Kazakhstan on November 30 and Iran on December 3. He will be joined in the pool by four-time Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo, Slaughter, Japeth Aguilar, Christian Standhardinger, Beau Belga, and company.
Aguilar shared Slaughter’s sentiments as Sotto will be learning from the best big men in the country.
“It’s going to be a big benefit for him kasi matututo siya sa mga veterans sa PBA like June Mar and Greg. Magandang opportunity for him,” said Aguilar.
The 7-foot-1 Sotto has shown his immense potential from his stints with Ateneo in the UAAP juniors competition and the Batang Gilas in the national youth team. He has also drawn interest from Spanish ball clubs.
Slaughter said he is very willing to impart knowledge to the 16-year-old center, a sentiment that he believes he also shares with his teammates in the pool.
“He is still really young. There will be a lot of stuff we can teach him from me, June Mar, Japeth, Christian. I think we bring something as a big man and hopefully, we can pass that out to him,” said Slaughter.
