GILAS Pilipinas women’s 3x3 team clinched a berth in the knockout stage of the FIBA Asia Cup as the top seed in Pool C on Good Friday at the Singapore Sports Hub.
The Filipina cagebelles swept their preliminary round assignments behind a 19-8 upset of third seed Mongolia and a 17-10 victory over No. 6 Malaysia for a 2-0 record heading to Sunday’s knockout round.
Seeded 11th in the 20-team field, the national squad of coach Eric Altamirano will be facing Pool A second seed Chinese Taipei, which earlier defeated host Singapore (18-8).
As expected top seed China took the No. 1 spot in Pool A with victories over Chinese Taipei (11-9) and Singapore (20-12).
Mongolia (1-1) meanwhile, took the No. 2 spot in Pool C and faces China in the quarterfinals.
Jhazmin Joson took care of business for Gilas in both games, firing 11 points in the win over Mongolia, while leading the way with six points in beating Malaysia.
The Filipinas got off to a 5-0 start against Mongolia, which is coming off a 21-4 rout of Malaysia, and never looked back, leading by as much as 14-6 on a two-pointer by Joson.
It was practically the same thing against Malaysia as Joson’s deuce gave the Philippine side an 11-4 lead at the final 4:00 minute mark.
