Gilas Women gets due recognition at PBA after historic SEA Games gold

THE PBA and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) honored on Sunday the Gilas Pilipinas Women for their gold medal victories in basketball and basketball 3x3 in the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial, SBP special assistant to the president Ryan Gregorio, and Sen. Bong Go led the awarding of trophies at halftime of Game One of the Governors’ Cup semifinals between TNT and Meralco.

The entire team was present for the ceremony.

The 3x3 team began the conquest of the women’s team in the SEA Games when Afril Bernardino, Jack Animam, Janine Pontejos, and Clare Castro captured the gold in the event’s debut in the biennial meet.

    Bernardino, Animam, Pontejos, and Castro then joined the basketball team that won the first-ever SEA Games gold medalist in the women’s division, where they capped a sweep of the competition with a 91-71 win over Thailand in the gold-medal game.

    On Saturday, the gold medal-winning men’s 3x3 team of CJ Perez, Mo Tautuaa, Chris Newsome, and Jason Perkins were also honored during halftime of Game One of the semifinals between Barangay Ginebra and NorthPort.

    Marcial said the Gilas Pilipinas Men’s basketball team will also be honored in similar ceremonies on Monday.
