Gilas Women drop out of Jones Cup contention after Japan loss

With Japan winning four games, it automatically boots the Philippines out of contention

GILAS Pilipinas Women dropped its third loss on Saturday against Japan Universiade, 94-74, in the 2025 William Jones Cup in Taipei.

The Philippines failed to sustain its play when it kept the game close in the first half as it was outscored by Japan, 22-12, in third quarter. By winning its fourth straight in as many games, Japan has ousted the Philippines from title contention in the Jones Cup.

Jack Animam had 21 points and 16 rebounds for Gilas Women, and Naomi Panganiban chipped in 14 points but their team fell to fourth place with a 1-3 win-loss slate.

Gilas Women is also using the Jones Cup as part of its preparation for the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup in Shenzhen, China from July 13 to 20. Incidentally, the Philippines will face the Japan senior national team in the said tournament.

Five players scored in double digits for Japan with Maika Miura finishing with 12 points.
