KAI Sotto led Gilas Pilipinas Youth to a 79-54 win over Al Rayyan on Monday in the first of its two tuneup games in Doha in preparation for the 2019 Fiba Under-19 World Cup.
The 7-foot-2 Sotto pumped 19 points on an efficient 7-of-10 shooting from the field, on top of two rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal in 26 minutes of play.
Frontcourt partner AJ Edu had six points, seven boards, five assists and three blocks, as Geo Chiu got eight points and five rebounds.
Rhayyan Amsali added nine points and four rebounds, while Gerry Abadiano also had nine points, three assists and two boards.
It was also the first tuneup game where Gilas Youth had Rome-based point guard Dalph Panopio, who racked up three points and two dimes in 14 minutes of action.
The Filipinos showed better ball movement in the game, dishing out 26 assists, while also forcing Al Rayyan to 23 turnovers as they led by as much as 30 points, 79-49.
Coach Sandy Arespacochaga continued to tinker with his lineup, giving everyone in his 14-man lineup ample playing time before finally making the decision on his final roster.
Gilas Youth will once again face Al Rayyan on Wednesday (Manila time), before heading to Heraklion, Greece for the global youth basketball showpiece.
