MISSION accomplished for the Gilas Pilipinas women’s U16 squad as it clinched promotion to Division A, beating Iran, 83-60, in the FIBA U16 Women’s Asian Championship in Amman, Jordan on Sunday (early Monday morning, Manila time).
Gilas Pilipinas Women complete Fiba Asia U16 Division B sweep
After failing to reach Division A last year, the Gilas girls left no doubt with a clean sweep of all five games played in this year’s Division B contest.
The Gilas girls blew away the competition with blowouts one after the other.
It was no different against Iran as the Filipinas led by as many as 27 points.
Bench production proved to be the difference for Gilas as they produced 41 markers from their subs as opposed to Iran’s nine.
Nevaeh Smith topscored in the championship clincher with 21 points along with two rebounds, one assist, and one steal.
Ava Fajardo fell one assist short of another double-double as she finished with 12 markers and nine dimes.
Fatemeh Jafari and Helya Houdneh each scored 14 points for Iran to pace them in the losing effort.
Malaysia completed the podium in Division B as they edged Hong Kong, 52-46, in the 3rd place game earlier Sunday.
The Gilas girls thus join Division A which is currently ruled by Australia, which recently copped a three-peat in the competition.
Syria will be relegated to Division B after ending up dead last in the competition.
Other teams in Division A include Japan, New Zealand, Chinese Taipei, Korea, China, and Samoa who won Division B last year.
