NATIONAL coach Yeng Guiao said widening the pool for the Fiba World Cup team is also a way of gearing up toward the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in which an all-PBA team is expected to be fielded for the biennial meet.
Guiao said he has also brought in the likes of PBA rookies CJ Perez of Columbian and Robert Bolick of NorthPort in the World Cup pool as part of the preparation of the Gilas Pilipinas team for the SEA Games.
“Sa tingin ko, kung pros din ang ipapadala sa Southeast Asian Games, they would be a good candidate,” said Guiao. “Umpisahan na ‘yung kanilang international experience for that.”
So far, all the focus is on the Gilas Pilipinas’ preparation in the Basketball World Cup, although the PBA has already said it will be lending its players if called upon for the SEA Games to be hosted by the country.
The PBA is also set to take a break from the action from November 30 to December 11, the duration of the 30th SEA Games.
Guiao said the SEA Games will also be a good opportunity for a few Gilas Pilipinas players to take a rest for the international competitions.
“Kung hinahanda na natin ngayon, nandiyan na sila, that’s going to give guys like Paul (Lee) and (Mark) Barroca, siguro sa position na ‘yun, a break if they want to take a break. Tutal, sa tingin ko naman, competitive na tayo with those guys kung talagang Gilas pa rin ang ipapadala sa SEA Games,” Guiao said.
