GILAS Pilipinas and Mighty Sports will battle in a tune-up game as part of their build-up for their respective tournaments.

Gilas head coach Yeng Guiao and Mighty Sports assistant coach Rajko Toroman confirmed the two teams will be playing against each other in a tune-up match with Toroman saying the game is slated on Monday.

The tune-up game will be a perfect place to determine where both teams are now in their preparations.

Gilas Pilipinas began its build-up last month in preparation for the Fiba World Cup slated August 30 to September 15 in China. The all-PBA line-up will be facing tough opponents in Serbia, Italy, and Angola in the competition.

Mighty Sports, meanwhile, started out its preparations for the Jones Cup on Monday. The tournament will run from July 12 to 21 and will have imports such former PBA imports Renaldo Balkman, Eugene Phelps, Hamady N’Diaye, and Zach Graham, and McKenzie Moore.

Toroman is currently preparing the squad with Mighty Sports head coach Charles Tiu in Greece being an assistant coach of Gilas Pilipinas Youth in the Fiba Under-19 Basketball World Cup.

Incidentally, Toroman will be once again coaching against Gilas Pilipinas but this time in a tune-up game environment. Toroman was the coach of the original Smart Gilas squad, an all-amateur squad that represented the country in international competitions from 2009 to 2011.

Toroman, however, has returned to the country as an assistant coach for Mighty Sports for the 2019 Jones Cup although he will leave the Philippines shortly after the competition after accepting a two-year offer to coach the Indonesia national team.

The Serbian coach will once again be facing Gilas Pilipinas in the 2021 Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers as well as the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in his capacity as Indonesia national coach.
