PH cagers set to face Japan in classification phase for shot at 5th place

Depleted Japanese fall to Hamed Haddadi-led Iran in quarterfinal matchup

JAKARTA – The Philippines will play Japan at the start of the classification phase of the 18th Asian Games men’s basketball competition.

Japan lost to Iran, 93-67, on Monday to be relegated to the battle for the fifth to eighth places in the men’s basketball tournament.

The Philippines will take on Japan on Tuesday, 4 p.m. (5 p.m.) Manila time at the GBK Basketball Hall, the winner of which will play in the battle for fifth place.

The Filipino cagers lost to Korea, 91-82, earlier in the day.

Hamed Haddadi had 22 points and 15 rebounds, while Sajjad Mashayekhi and Mohammadsamad Nikkhahbahrami had 17 and 16 points respectively.

Japan was led by Naoya Kumagae, who finished with 14 points.

Japan is playing with only eight men after four players were sent home following ‘a night with women’ while the tournament is ongoing.
