YENG Guiao considers the coming two-game friendlies Gilas Pilipinas will have against the visiting Adelaide 36ers as the final run-through to determine the official team roster for the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
While majority of the team composition is already a cinch, Guiao’s coaching staff is still uncertain about who will take the 11th and 12th spot in China.
So the games against the 36ers will go down as the homestretch of the players’ supposed tryouts with Gilas.
Guiao hopes to make the final lineup shortly after the series against the 36ers.
“Pagkatapos ng Australian series magme-meeting na kami agad ng coaching staff. Baka ‘yung (August) 26 and latest yung (August) 27 buo na yun, mabubuo na yun,” said Guiao after practice Monday night at the Meralco gym.
“Kasi kailangan na nating ipaalam sa team kung sinong makakasama at kung sinong hindi, so mbubuo na agad yun after the Australian series.”
The 36ers, one of the member ballclubs of Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL) will arrive in the country on Wednesday.
The national team play the Aussie-based team on Friday and again on Sunday.
“Yung 10 dyan sa 12 natin ay medyo more or less ay nakabuo na. Yung two slots na lang ang binubuo natin,” said Guiao.
“Crucial especially for the last two slots. Also for our final adjustments, kailangan makita natin doon yung last minute adjustments natin,” he added. “Makita din natin doon kung papaano i-desisyon yung 12-man lineup, so that’s how important it is.”
