YENG Guiao finally got what he wanted from the very start.
By next week, Gilas Pilipinas will start practicing on a daily basis to fasttrack its preparation for the coming FIBA World Cup.
Guiao said the team will practice Monday to Friday beginning next week from 6-8 p.m. at the Meralco gym.
"Next week we'll practice every day," Guiao announced on Monday after the team wrapped up its two-hour session with only nine players suiting up.
The national coach had been longing for Gilas Pilipinas to have a daily practice in the build-up for the World Cup, a plan that runs counter to the scheduled games of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
At the most, Guiao was assured of having the national players at his disposal on a daily basis only by the start of August.
But as per agreement with the PBA, players whose teams are no longer in contention in the ongoing playoffs are already compelled to attend to their duties with the national team.
“We have an understating with the PBA and the pba board that as soon as the players are vacant and their mother teams are no longer playing, we’ll have full control of the players. So yun ang mangyayari,” said Guiao.
By weekend, the semifinals of the mid-season conference will already be underway, meaning only four teams will remain in contention for the championship, with the other players already be available to practice with Gilas.
Under the schedule, the national team will have the benefit of practicing daily for a week before it departs for Spain for a series of tune-up games that will run for more than a week.
“Ang expectations namin ay magkakaroon na kami ng better chemistry, better conditioning for Andray since kailangan na rin siyang makapag up-and-down, kailangan na rin siyang makapag offense and defense. Ngayon puro 5-and-0 lang ang ginagawa namin,” said Guiao.
“Before we leave for Spain on August 4 we should be able more or less be 70 to 80 percent na, yung 30 and 20 percent kailangan habulin na namin doon pagsampa ng August.”
