GILAS Pilipinas has been bracketed in Group E with Asian champion Iran in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, Korea.

The Philippine national basketball team earned an automatic spot in the second round after finishing in the top eight of the Asian Games basketball competition four years ago in Guangzhou, China.

But Gilas Pilipinas will be facing a daunting task early in the tournament as it will be joined in Group E by Iran, the same nation that beat Gilas Pilipinas in last year’s Fiba-Asia Championship in Manila.

A third team from Group B will join the Philippines and Iran with Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Palestine, and India battling for the lone spot in Group E.

Also gaining outright entry in the second round were China and Chinese Taipei in Group C, host South Korea and Jordan in Group D, and Japan and Qatar in Group F.

Vying for slots in the second round are Mongolia, Hong Kong, Kuwait, and Maldives in Group A and Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, Palestine, and India in Group B.
