WITH focus on developing a crack team for the new Olympic sport of 3x3 basketball, one of Gilas Pilipinas’ main backers has expressed desire to focus on the sport moving forward.

Bounty Agro Ventures Inc. president Ronald Mascariñas bared plans to put up a team, and to an extent, a full-fledged 3x3 league with the goal of having a team complete for a medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“We need to sustain a 3x3 team in the country. We can’t always outsource players and we need to have a decent program,” he said on Thursday during the Chooks-to-Go-hosted thanksgiving dinner for the Philippine teams which competed in the 2018 Fiba 3x3 World Cup.

Though Mascariñas said that nothing is concrete yet, the plan is a start for one of the newest Olympic medal sports.

“What’s important is the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio and executive director Sonny Barrios are dead-serious in forming a full-time 3x3 team and organizing a sustainable 3x3 tournament nationwide,” he said.

“The next order is to sit down with SBP and agree on what to do. We are serious and willing to support our campaign for us to qualify sa 3x3 sa Olympics.”

Gilas team manager Butch Antonio acknowledged how ambitious a goal Mascariñas has for the 3x3 program.

“With Chooks at the forefront of this endeavor, with the prospects of having a focus outside of the 5-on-5 game, it’s not gonna be easy, but it can be done,” he said.
