Gabe Norwood surprised to be back in the reckoning for a Gilas spot in Fiba Asia Cup

    Jul 9, 2017

GABE Norwood admitted he was surprised to see his name in the Gilas Pilipinas pool of players that are being considered for spots in the squad for the Fiba Asia Cup next month in Lebanon.

The national team veteran is part of the 24-man pool coach Chot Reyes announced on Saturday, moving him a step closer to a return to the national side after being excluded from consideration for the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) Championship last May.

“I didn’t really expect it, and was surprised when I opened my Twitter app and saw my notifications,” Norwood said in a text message on Sunday.

“It’s an honor to still be considered a possible asset for the program,” added the 32-year-old Rain or Shine utility man, who has represented the country in the continental level since 2009.

Now that he’s in the pool, Norwood is relishing the opportunity to again fight for spots in the Asian showpiece event that somehow serves as a feel-out tournament for the home-and-away World Cup qualifiers starting November.

“In regards to the Fiba Asia lineup, I have no idea (of my chances),” Norwood said. "Will leave that up to the coaches.”

Reyes reminded everyone that the 24-man list is not yet the final.

“A lot of factors still need to be ironed out,” the national coach said in a separate tweet hours after posting the list on his account.
