IRAQ pulled off a stunner after riding a fourth quarter surge to stun Iran, 74-66, for a shocking start to both countries’ campaign in the Fiba World Cup qualifiers on Friday (Saturday, Manila time) in Amman, Jordan.

Iraq’s naturalized player Demario Mayfield led the way with an all-around performance, finishing with 24 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and the same number of steals.

The Iraqis battled Iranians, who were without star Hamed Haddadi, to a closely contested match, with Iraq up 55-54 after three quarters. But Mayfield and Co. started to pull away after a strong fourth quarter start, holding Iran to just 12 points in the final frame while scoring 19.

Hassan Abdullah added 15 points for Iraq, who will take on Kazakhstan in their next game on November 27.

Farid Aslani had 16 points in a losing effort for Iran, who hosts Qatar on Monday. Oshin Sahakian added 13 markers for the Iranians.
