GILAS Pilipinas has already started the process of forming a pool for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
This was the assurance made by Gilas head coach Yeng Guiao with the deadline for submission of lineup fast approaching.
The Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc) set a September 2 deadline for the submission of entries by name for all sports for each of the 11 countries that will compete in the 30th SEA Games.
Guiao admitted the SEA Games has yet to be discussed thoroughly since Gilas Pilipinas is in deep preparations for the Fiba Basketball World Cup.
Nevertheless, Guiao said the coaching staff has already touched on the SEA Games with the deadline already a few weeks away.
“Of course, hindi pa namin napag-uusapan ng husto ‘yung SEA Games dahil we are trying to focus on the World Cup, except that meron na rin silang hinihinging list,” said Guiao following Wednesday night’s practice at the Meralco gym.
“Pinag-uusapan namin internally kung sino ang nasa list. Pero siguro, kung sakali man, sa China na pag-uusapan kapag nabuo na ‘tong team natin (for the World Cup),” said Guiao.
“Buo-in muna natin ‘yung team natin bago tayo mag-isip na bumuo uli ng panibagong team,” said Guiao.
Guiao, however, said players who will not make it to the cut will be assured of a spot in the SEA Games.
“Hindi naman 100 percent but I’m assuring the guys, if there will be cuts made, 15 ‘yan kasama si Marcio, ibig sabihin, ‘yung tatlo, hindi makakalaro. I will make sure that they will have a slot in the SEA Games. That’s the only thing I can guarantee at this point,” said Guiao.
The basketball competitions will be held December 4 to 10 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
