FIBA has lifted the suspension of the Japan Basketball Association (JBA), allowing its team to play in the 2015 Fiba-Asia Championship in Changsha, China next month.
The Fiba Central Board decision takes effect immediately. Japan was suspended from all Fiba-sanctioned tournaments late last year after the JBA failed to merge its two professional leagues—the Basketball Japan League and the National Basketball League.
Fiba’s decision came after the formation of the Japan Professional Basketball League and the overhaul of the JBA under its new president Saburo Kawabuchi
“We hope to see Japan compete in the 2019 Fiba Basketball World Cup in China and having a successful participation in the Olympic Basketball Tournament at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” said Fiba president Horacio Muratore in a statement.
Despite the suspension, Japan was included in the draw for the Fiba-Asia Championship and was bracketed in Group A with reigning champion Iran, India, and Malaysia where they could possibly face teams in Group B that includes Gilas Pilipinas, Palestine, Kuwait, and an East Asian qualifier.
