JAYSON Castro got high praise from Lebanon star Fadi El Khatib as the Gilas Pilipinas stalwart was included in the Lebanese gunner’s ‘Dream Team’ in the upcoming Fiba Asia Cup next month in Beirut.
In a fiba.com interview, the 38-year-old El Khatib, who has been leading Lebanon since the 2002 Fiba World Cup, bared that Castro was among the five stars he considers worthy of a place in Asia’s Dream Team.
Castro has excelled for Gilas in the past two Fiba Asia Cups, making the Mythical Five of the 2013 and 2015 tournaments, respectively, after helping the Philippines to consecutive runner-up finishes.
In the Fiba Asia Cup in China two years ago, the TNT KaTropa guard even managed to end up eighth among all scorers in the tournament with an average of 16.7 points to validate his standing as the best point guard in Asia.
El Khatib’s Asia Dream Team also features two Iran stalwarts in center Hamed Haddadi and lethal wing Samad Nikkah Bahrami. China’s star Yi Jianlian holds the power forward spot, while the Lebanese great included himself to complete the stellar squad.
El Khatib has long been a fan of Gilas guards after numerous encounters between Lebanon and the Philippines.
In fact back in 2009, he even praised former Gilas skipper Jimmy Alapag as the best point guard in Asia after several battles with the then-Talk N Text spitfire guard leading the Philippine team’s backcourt.
