GILAS Pilipinas coach Tim Cone wouldn’t want to speculate yet on the extent of the injury suffered by national pool player Dwight Ramos less than three months before the FIBA Olympic Qualifying tournament.
Cone said the national team is still gathering information on the eye damage Ramos endured during Levanga Hokkaido’s loss to Utsonomiya Brex last week in the Japan B League.
According to the team report, the Gilas Pilipinas guard went down with an orbital floor fracture and is out indefinitely.
“We’re not sure yet on how long it will keep him out,” said Cone when asked about the condition of the 25-year-old Ramos.
An orbital floor fracture is when bones of the rim of one’s socket are pushed back, causing the orbital floor bones to buckle downward.
People who suffer the eye injury are usually advised to avoid lifting heavy objects or engaging in strenuous physical activity for at least three weeks.
If ever, Ramos is the third player in the Gilas pool who is currently injured behind Jamie Malonzo (calf injury) and AJ Edu (torn meniscus)
The injury leaves the Gilas pool with only Scottie Thompson, Chris Newsome, Calvin Oftana, CJ Perez, June Mar Fajardo, Carl Tamayo, Kai Sotto, Kevin Quiambao, Justin Brownlee, and reserves Japeth Aguilar and Mason Amos.
Thompson and Fajardo are still playing through pain though, owing to a slipped disc and broken nose, respectively.
Gilas Pilipinas is expected to start training camp by the end of May or the first week of June for the Paris Olympic qualifier set in Latvia from July 2-7.
