GILAS Pilipinas assistant coach Jong Uichico has apologized for his role in Monday night’s brawl in the Fiba Basketball World Cup Asian qualifiers between Gilas Pilipinas and Australia.
In a tweet early Tuesday morning, Uichico admitted his emotions got the better of him when he joined the brawl between players of Gilas and Australia.
The multi-titled PBA coach and former national mentor was seen in viral videos appearing to throw a chair at an Australian player and later throwing punches at the height of the fracas.
Uichico admitted he made a mistake.
“Tonight, my emotions got the better of me like a father who cares about his sons,” wrote Uichico. “That does not excuse my actions and I apologize to everyone as in hindsight I should have not gotten involved.”
Uichico said the incident is also a lesson for him moving forward.
“This is a painful but maybe necessary lesson for me,” said Uichico.
