JAKARTA – Christian Standhardinger missed his sister’s wedding in Germany on Friday as he is here to represent the Philippines in the 18th Asian Games.
Standhardinger watched his sister’s wedding on Facetime, admitting that he was saddened not being there in person. He said he never felt playing for the country as a sacrifice until on Friday.
“I do have to admit I got a little emotional because I watched it on Facetime and I want to be there and hug her after she said ‘I do’ and seeing family and stuff like this,” said Standhardinger.
“I never felt like a sacrifice playing for the country until yesterday,” Standhardinger added.
The San Miguel big man is part of the national team that is playing in the men’s basketball tournament. The Philippines is now preparing for Korea in their quarterfinal round on Monday.
Standhardinger said he shares the same experience with his Philippine teammates who at one point during their career also experience those moments of missing out family affairs in favor of playing for flag and country.
Standhardinger said it will entail a three-day trip from the Philippines to Germany for him to attend the wedding of her sister, who is one year younger.
“Obviously, that is not possible since we have one of most important games,” said Standhardinger.
Standhardinger said he is looking at the bigger picture as he is happy that the team can bring joy to the Filipino people back home when the men’s basketball team competes against other countries.
“Once we get back, people are able to choose to be motivated and inspired by us playing hard and giving our best on the court. I think that’s very important to affect people on a positive change and into a more output and outlook in life,” said Standhardinger.
