WITH less than two weeks before the Fiba Asia Champions Cup, Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes said nothing is certain yet as far as the Chooks to Go lineup is concerned.
Twenty players showed up in the first official practice on Wednesday night at the Meralco Gym for the team which locks horns in the China showpiece from September 22 to 30.
But out of the 20, only Isaiah Austin, Kiefer Ravena, Jeron Teng, Raymar Jose, and Norbert Torres are officially part of the pool.
The availability of PBA players like Terrence Romeo and Calvin Abueva are also up in the air due to the ongoing PBA Governors' Cup, where their mother teams are still fighting for survival.
Deadline of the submission of the final lineup is on Friday.
"It’s all up in the air pa. Di pa natin alam with any finality who the other players are going to be," said Reyes, whose team was invited to the tournament at the last minute after a Japanese club team backed out.
Still, it was a good day for Reyes and his coaching staff.
After the training that lasted for an hour and a half, Reyes noted that the 7-foot-1 former Baylor standout, who is being considered for naturalization, is tailor-fit for the team which is in danger of missing the services of Andray Blatche in the Fiba World Cup Qualifers in November.
"I think he’s perfect. He can play with anyone, with any of our bigs. He can play with Toto Jose, he can play with Norbert Torres, he can play with Carl Cruz," he said.
"And even in the main Gilas team, he can play with June Mar. June Mar can play inside, he can play outside. With Japeth, Japeth can play outside, he’ll play inside. With Almazan, same thing. The reason we got him, it’s almost like having an Andray Blatche who is very versatile. Pwede sa loob, pwde sa labas."
