JUST when everybody thought Chot Reyes is now going to just focus on attending boardroom meetings, here he comes with a big breaking news on Tuesday.
Reyes was named Gilas head coach anew during a special Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) meeting where it was decided that potential members of the cadet team will be included in the PBA draft at the Bonifacio Global City.
Tab Baldwin, the last man at the helm of Gilas, was relegated to his old rolse as national team consultant.
'Back in the hotseat. God bless us. #LabanPilipinas #PUSO," Reyes tweeted on his account@coachot as his way of confirming the move.
Reyes assumed the coaching job of the national team anew after about a month since being named as TV5 president.
The champion coach last handled Gilas during the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea, but was credited as the one responsible for steering the country back into the FIBA World Cup two years ago in Spain following the national team's runner-up finish in the 2013 FIBA-Asia men's championship here.
“We want to go back to our winning formula so to speak,” said SBP executive director Sonny Barrios, who announced the appointment of Reyes in front of members of the Gilas cadets team.”Mr. Baldwin will still be with us. He will be consultant with the team.”
Baldwin also led the Gilas team to a silver medal finish in last year's FIBA Asia championship, but fell short of a win to qualify in the 2016 Rio Olympics. The national team did earn a berth in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament held here in Manila, but failed to register a win in two games against France and New Zealand to bow out of contention.
“Hindi naman overnight lang yan. It’s not like only last night na pinag desisyunan yan,” said Barrios of the coaching change.
“Matagal na usap-usapan yan,” he said. “Si coach Chot diretso yan kay Boss MVP natin, and he was asked to lay down his plans and programs if ever the responsibility is given to him.”
