GILAS Pilipinas’ performance in their second tune-up game against Finland in preparation for the 2023 Fiba Basketball World Cup was far from perfect.

For head coach Chot Reyes, their play was as expected as Gilas capped their Estonia camp with two straight defeats, losing to Finland, 89-85. But Reyes reiterated that the two matches are part of the learning process that Gilas has to go through over the course of their three-month build-up for the Basketball World Cup.

See Gilas Pilipinas scheduled to play 'at least four games' in Lithuania, says Chot

“I was very happy with our effort, very happy with the game,” said Reyes in an interview with One Sports’ Carlo Pamintuan. “It’s obvious that we are still very far from being in any kind of competitive game shape. But we are not supposed to be in game shape yet at this point because we have to make sure that we peak at the right time. We don’t want to peak too early and then burnout in the end.”

“It’s all part of the process and I’m very happy. I’m very happy. I’m very satisfied with the effort. Sure there’s a lot of things to work on but those are things that we knew coming in are going to be problems. Those are the challenges that we are going to face,” said Reyes.

Even with the defeat, Reyes saw some positives in the game including cutting down the errors of the game.

“We had definite matrix as targets for this game. Number one was to cut down our turnovers. We had 23 [against Estonia] and we want it to cut that down. Today we were able to cut it down by eight. We finished with 15 assists on 15 turnovers. At least, we were able to up our assists-turnover ratio to 1 is to 1 as against yesterday when it was a negative. It was a good sign that we played better today. We shot better as well from two points and three-point land,” said Reyes.

The two games that also saw Gilas lose to Estonia, 81-71, also gave Reyes and the coaching staff points to adjust.

The Finland game saw how a poor start once again cost Gilas Pilipinas where it trailed by as many as 18 points during the first quarter, forcing them to mount another comeback to make the game competitive.

“So many positives in this ballgame. Definitely, some negatives. But the two most glaring negatives were rebounding and our inability to start strong. We had a poor first quarter start and a poor third quarter start. Those are the things that we have to continue working on in the future,” Reyes said.

Gilas was outrebounded, 55-37, something that is a concern being in a height disadvantage during the Fiba competition.

“We got beaten up in the boards. We got outrebounded by almost 20 boards, most of it on offensive rebounds. We gave up 26 offensive rebounds. That’s really going to be a continuing cause of concern because of the size of all the teams that we are playing. That’s something that we have to continue to work on,” said Reyes.
