CALVIN Oftana sustained a Grade 1 sprain in his right ankle during Gilas Pilipinas’ game against Iraq on Saturday in the FIBA Asia Cup.
This was the prognosis on Oftana’s ankle after a further check with Gilas team doctor Randy Molo after the game where Gilas Pilipinas recorded its first win of the Asia Cup with a 66-57 victory over Iraq, SPIN.ph learned.
Oftana escaped major injury as a Grand 1 sprain is considered mild.

He was seen writhing in pain and holding his right ankle after he stepped on the foot of Iraq’s Ihab Al-Zuhairi with 3:19 remaining in the game, and later assisted on his way back to the bench by Gilas Pilipinas team manager Alfrancis Chua and physical therapist Arcee Cua.
Pending official word from the national team, the TNT gunner is deemed doubtful for Gilas Pilipinas’ qualification to the quarterfinals game as online resources say a Grade 1 sprain takes one to three weeks to heal.
There was concern about Oftana's well-being as he has been dealing with ankle sprains in his right and left foot since the PBA Philippine Cup playoffs. Oftana was initially doubtful for the FIBA Asia Cup for that reason but was cleared to play, and included in the line-up.
