BURKE ‘BT’ Toews has been appointed as the new head coach of the Gilas Pilipinas Women national team, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas announced on Wednesday.
Toews, a Canadian coach based in Japan, was hired “after months of searching across continents with more than a dozen applicants,” according to the SBP.
Toews replaces Pat Aquino, who spent 12 years at the helm of the national women's team. He is now coach of Blackwater in the PBA.
Toews recently finished his stint as head coach of Fujitsu Red Wave in Japan’s women’s professional league, winning two straight championships in 2024 and 2025.
He also led Fujitsu to the All-Japan Championship during those years.
He coached Fujitsu for 10 seasons where he led the Red Wave to five finals appearances and three Coach of the Year distinctions.
Toews also led the Hyoko Storks to the JBL2 championship in 2013.
Toews will look to bring Gilas Women to new heights following landmark feats including an appearance in the Women’s World Cup qualifier recently in France.
