AFRIL Bernardino, Janine Pontejos, Clare Castro, and Jack Animam will lead the Gilas Pilipinas Women team in basketball as well as in basketball 3x3 in the 30th Southeast Asian Games.
The four players will be playing in both events in their quest to win a gold medal in the women’s division, according to sources.
Also called up for the five-a-side team were Eunique Chan, Chack Cabinbin, Kelli Hayes, Danica Jose, Ria Joy Nabalan, Andrea Tongco, Gemma Miranda, and Khate Castillo.
Bernardino, Pontejos, Castro, and Animam represented the Philippines in the 2019 Fiba 3x3 Asia Cup where they finished 10th among 12 teams.
The Philippines is looking to make a podium finish in this year’s SEA Games after missing out on the medal in the last two editions of the competition including a fourth-place finish in 2017 in Kuala Lumpur.
Only four teams will see action in the women’s basketball competitions. The Gilas Pilipinas Women take a bye in Day One of the round-robin tournament before taking on Indonesia on December 5.
The women’s team will return to action on December 8 against Malaysia, before capping its tournament with a match against Thailand on December 10.
