AS someone who’s played under Yeng Guiao for so long a time, Beau Belga is helping Team Pilipinas members, particularly the ‘bigs,’ understand how the national coach runs his system.
Belga’s inputs are definitely a welcome one especially for players still trying to cope with the different plays laid down by Guiao, three days before the national squad battles Kazakhstan in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
Guiao had been a bit hard on Team Pilipinas’ big men during the four tuneup matches it had with Lebanon and Jordan for what the coach termed as ‘lack of effort.’
But Belga, who was one of Guiao’s primary threats inside during his time with Rain or Shine, said that’s the way the champion coach has always been.
“Sabi niya (Guiao) malalaki nga pero parang mabagal kami (big men). So ako sinasabi ko, they need to be challenged,” said the burly center out of Philippine Christian University. “And way ni coach Yeng sa pag-challenge sa mga players is in a negative way, and it’s up to you kung paano mo iha-handle.”
Although affected by Guiao's words, Belga is trying to explain to his fellow big men how the system works in a manner that won’t offend them as well.
“When it comes (sa big men), napapagalitan ang big men, nasasaktan ako,” he admitted. “Kaya sinasabi ko sa kanila kung ano yung sistema, yung mga gusto ni coach Yeng.
“Ako I know the system and I’m letting them know what he wants,” added Belga, one of only three players in the national pool previously handled by Guiao in the past along with Paul Lee and Gabe Norwood.
“Pero hindi ako yung pinagagalitan ko sila. Wala akong karapatan. Mas better sila sa akin, mas talented sila sa akin. But I think when it comes to his (Guiao) system, mas may alam ako. Mas may alam ako sa sistema ni Yeng Guiao kaysa sa kanila. At yun lang ang gusto kong malaman nila, yung sistema.”
Following the last of those tune-up games, Guiao disclosed the team had devised additional plays for towering June Mar Fajardo and Greg Slaughter.
While it may be obvious the two giants have yet to fully comprehend the system run by Guiao, Belga believes Fajardo and Slaughter will be very effective once they finally settle down.
“Sa tingin ko kapag nakuha nila yung gusto niya (Guiao), mas magiging madali.”
