BATANG Gilas' coming stint in the Fiba Under-17 World Cup is bound to give its players a chance to impress and attract attention of scouts and US schools.
But Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes has a word of caution for the youngsters should that opportunity come.
"We have yet to see a Filipino player play in the (US) NCAA and become a better player," Reyes said during the welcome party for the Batang Gilas side that finished fourth in the last Fiba Under-16 Asia Championship in Foshan, China.
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but we've yet to see a player go there and become better," he added.
Still, Reyes said he wouldn't take issue should any player under the Gilas fold decide to take his act to the US college leagues, saying the decision is entirely up to the players and their families.
His main concern is that these players be made available when national team duties come calling.
"It's up to the player and the parent but for us, we have to make sure that they're made available to the national team," said Reyes.
"Ganun naman all over the world, saan man sila mapunta, we have to make sure na they're available to the national team."
