BATANG Gilas proved no match against a taller Chinese team as it suffered a 95-66 rout on Sunday for its second loss in the Fiba Asia U18 Championship in Tehran, Iran.

The Philippine Youth team trailed early, 29-14, after the first quarter, setting the stage for the lopsided game.

The Filipinos fell to a 1-2 record after losing their opening day game against Chinese Taipei.

Jolo Mendoza topscored with 19 points for the Batang Gilas, which was outrebounded by China, 61-26.

The Chinese remain on top of Group A with a 3-0 record in a tie with Chinese Taipei, while tied for third to fifth place are the Philippines, Iraq, and India, all with similar 1-2 cards. Only Thailand is left winless in the bracket at 0-3.

The Filipinos need to sweep their remaining games against India and Thailand to advance in the knockout phase of the meet that offers three berths in next year’s FIBA U19 World Championship in Egypt.

The tournament takes a break on Monday.
