YENG Guiao showed up at the Smart Araneta Coliseum straight from Jakarta, Indonesia to support his NLEX team in its PBA Governors Cup game against San Miguel Beer.
Guiao arrived just before the 6:45 p.m. match straight from the airport, a day after steering the national team to a fifth-place finish in the 18th Asian Games.
But Guiao didn't call the shots for the team, allowing acting coach Jojo Lastimosa to do his thing.
"Coaching burnout, " he said as he made his way to the NLEX dugout.
National team big man Christian Standhardinger also did the same for the Beermen, but did one better by suiting up for his team.
"I had to play. It's my team's first game," said the Fil-German rookie of his decision to play instead of opting to rest.
Standhardinger was later fielded in with 3.3 seconds left in the first quarter and NLEX leading, 27-26.
Both Guiao and Standhardinger were welcomed with a warm ovation by the weekend crowd watching at the Big Dome when they were acknowledged during the game.
