FORMER PBA and ABL import Renaldo Balkman has been included by the Puerto Rican basketball federation to be part of its pool for the 2019 Fiba Basketball World Cup.
According to a press release by the Federacion De Baloncesto De Puerto Rico, Balkman, 35, has accepted an invitation to be part of the pool and will join the team for the Atlas Challenge Basketball Tournament in Suzhou, China.
“Given the need for versatile and athletic players in our delegation, we invited Renaldo Balkman to join the national preselection and, after being presented with the same agreements as his other teammates, the athlete accepted and will be accompanying us in China,” said FDBDR president Yum Ramos.
“He was very enthusiastic and eager to represent Puerto Rico again,” Ramos added of the former NBA player.
Balkman, who was part of the Puerto Rico team that beat Gilas in the 2014 Fiba World Cup in Seville, Spain, will be vying for a slot in the Final 12 of Puerto Rico, which is bracketed in Group C along with Spain, Iran, and Tunisia.
If Balkman makes it to the Final 12, the former San Miguel import will have a chance to face Gilas Pilipinas in either the second round or in the classification phase for 17th to 32nd place. Teams in Group C and D will be grouped in either Group J in the second round or Group N in the classification phase.
Balkman last played for San Miguel Alab Pilipinas in the ABL in the 2018-2019 season, after suiting up for San Miguel in the 2018 Commissioner’s Cup.
Balkman also suited up for Mighty Sports when they saw action in the 2019 William Jones Cup where he won the MVP.
