AUSTRALIA pounced on a shorthanded Iran side, rolling to a 76-47 victory on Friday in Melbourne to become to the first Asian country to clinch a spot in the next year’s Fiba World Cup.
The Boomers pulled away in a tight game late in the first quarter as they dominated an Iranian side missing injured stars Hamed Haddadi and Arasalan Kazemi.
Daniel Johnson and Mitch McCarron led the balanced attack of the Australians, who have won all but one of their nine games in these qualifiers.
At least two more slots from Group F, where Team Pilipinas is also bracketed, are up for grabs.
