Australia scores 63-point rout of Malaysia ahead of battle with Batang Gilas

AUSTRALIA trounced Malaysia, 110-47, on Tuesday ahead of its Fiba Under-16 Asian Championship preliminary match against the Philippines in Foshan, China.

Jay Rantall had 21 points, while Tamuri Wigness and Joel Capetola added 12 points each for the Aussies in their first match in the tournament.

Malaysia was coming off a close 62-57 loss to Batang Gilas.

Australia and the Philippines, both sporting 1-0 records, face off on Wednesday, the winner taking the top spot in Group C and an outright berth in the quarterfinals.

The loser will play the third-placer of Group D for a slot in the quarterfinals.

Australia, ranked No. 10 in the world, and the Batang Gilas actually has the same average height at 6 feet 4 inches, with Australia having five players taller than 6-foot-6. Australia’s tallest player is 6-foot-8 Paul Tsapatolis.

Batang Gilas, on the other hand, will have 7-foot-1 Kai Sotto but the team only has three players over 6 feet 7.
