THE Gilas Pilipinas Women’s team could not scale the mountain that was Australia, bowing 123-57 in the opener of the 2019 Fiba Women's Asia Cup Tuesday at Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bangalore, India.
The Filipinas had no answer to the Aussies' 29-9 onslaught led by Jenna O'Hea as eight players scored in double digits for the Opals.
O'Hea finished with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Ezi Magbegor took advantage of the extended garbage time as she notched a team-high 18 points on an 8-of-10 shooting from the field, on top of six boards, three blocks and two steals.
Cayla George also added a double-double for the Aussies with 11 points and 14 rebounds as they cruised to the 66-point win.
It was a tough opener for the girls of coach Pat Aquino, but it doesn't get any easier from here, with China awaiting on Wednesday in Pool B.
Gemma Miranda led Gilas Women with 17 points and four rebounds, while Afril Bernardino had 15 points and four boards.
Not helping the Philippines' cause was Australia picking the former's pocket for 15 steals.
It also hurt that the Filipinas were whistled for 26 fouls, which the Aussies gladly converted in their 23-of-28 shooting from the charity stripe.
