Apologetic Chot Reyes explains frustration, timeout late in Gilas win over Japan

    Nov 24, 2017
Chot Reyes personally apologized to the Japan coaching staff for the late timeout.

A WIN over Japan was in the bag for Gilas Pilipinas on Friday night, but its coach was nowhere near happy on the bench.

Chot Reyes, in fact, blew his top when Andray Blatche turned the ball over and Kevin Alas, fresh off the bench, fouled Ira Brown on a fastbreak, sending Japan's naturalized player to the free-throw line with .2 of a second left in the 2019 Fiba World Cup qualifier.

In an even weirder turn, Reyes called a timeout with .2 left on the clock and Gilas well beyond reach, 77-71, after the Brown free throws.

    How come?

In an interview with Aaron Atayde on ESPN5’s Sports Center, Reyes said he got confused by the interpretation of the Fiba rules on the World Cup qualifying which, according to some claims, will let the quotient system decide the winner of home-and-away matches.

There were also claims that there will be no extra periods during the first game of the home-and-away series, with overtime only allowed in the second game if the two sides ended up tied in cumulative scores.

The confusion was only cleared up when Fiba declared such rules do not apply in the Fiba World Cup qualifying since it is a round-robin tournament.

Still, Reyes was still apparently confused during the game - hence the timeout.

“I want to apologize to the Japanese coach Julio Lamas for that last timeout because we were very confused on the rules of the game,” Reyes told Atayde during the interview.

“There was cumulative, there was quotient or not, but now after this, we got word it’s just gonna be win and loss so I should not have called the timeout, and I apologized personally to the Japan coaching staff.”
