TAIPEI - National coach Tab Baldwin had hoped Andray Blatche can at least play even just one game with Gilas Pilipinas in the 37th Jones Cup after an unplanned trip to the US.
That is no longer possible.
Blatche was supposed to arrive in this city on Saturday night after attending the funeral of his uncle. And depending on his condition, Baldwin had hoped he can rejoin Gilas in its final game against Chinese-Taipei B on Sunday.
However, Gilas officials bared on Friday that Blatche was forced to rebook his flight to Taipei to attend to his mother and, as a result, will only arrive on Sunday night - too late to suit up against Taipei B.
In fact, the former Brooklyn Net will only make a brief stopover here as he is set to join the national team in the trip back to Manila on Monday morning.
That is another setback in the buildup of Gilas for the Fiba Asia Championship and Blatche's own bid to return to form after reporting for training camp overweight.
No wonder Baldwin is anxious to see the shape Blatche is in when he arrives.
