THERE is a difference between being in-shape and in game shape - and that's exactly where Andray Blatche is right now.
The 6'11 naturalized big man came in earlier than usual and was clearly in better shape ahead of Gilas Pilipinas' campaign in the third qualifying window for the 2019 Fiba World Cup in China.
However, Gilas head coach Chot Reyes said Blatche is still far from being in game form.
"He's been working out but he hasn't been in game shape," Reyes said.
In the past, Blatche has been either hobbled by injuries or tied up with his commitment to his Chinese pro team, delaying his arrival but guaranteeing his sharpness considering his everyday grind in the Chinese league.
This time, Blatche arrived early from a vacation in the US but is not yet in game shape, Reyes admitted.
"Obviously. It helped in the sense that he is already here and he has been working out," said Reyes. "As against before na he was injured or playing with his Chinese Team, the good thing with that was that he was in game shape. Now he is not in game shape at all."
The outspoken Gilas head coach is hoping against hope that Blatche reaches his form in time..
"Hopefully, him coming early will bode well for us."
