All's well that ends well for Gilas as Standhardinger apologizes to team for flare-up

    Jul 21, 2017

TAIPEI - National coach Chot Reyes on Friday played down an outburst on a 'cheap shot' delivered by Christian Standhardinger against an Iraqi player, saying Gilas Pilipinas has put the incident behind after the Fil-German big man apologized to the team.

"It's no big deal for us," said Reyes, a day after becoming so infuriated over Standhardinger's hit on Dhulfiqar Al-hchaimi during a television timeout in the game's final 4:55 that he ordered the Gilas new boy to go back to the dugout ahead of everybody else.

"Wala namang issue sa amin 'yon. Ibang tao lang naman ang nagpapalaki 'nyan pero it's no big deal for us," added the Gilas coach.

Gilas officials bared Standhardinger also apologized to the team inside the dugout after the hot-tempered 84-75 win over Iraq, saying all he ever wanted was to stand up for the team.

Even before the incident, Standhardinger had already been in and out of the game for three quarters as Reyes was clearly unhappy with his play and shot selection.

"Pinabalik ko nga sa dugout dahil what he did was absolutely unacceptable," Reyes said afterwards. "Now I think they understand that we won't tolerate such things."

But on Friday, Reyes said the incident was a non-issue as far as the team is concerned.

"It's a learning experience for him. Those are things he has to learn the hard way," the Gilas coach said. "But we're not even making a fuzz out of it."
