KUALA LUMPUR - Gilas Pilipinas trounced Myanmar, 129-34, on Tuesday to take another step closer to the 29th Southeast Asian Games men's basketball title at the MABA Stadium.
Nearly all the players helped the Gilas' cause including Kobe Paras, who got major minutes in the lopsided win after he was used sparingly in an 81-74 close call against Thailand two days earlier.
The Filipinos opened a 60-10 lead halftime lead in a total mismatch which they used to experiement on different combinations and plays ahead of a match against host Malaysia.
Raymar Jose topscored for the Gilas cadets with 22 points but it was Paras who stole the show as he brought excitement to the good-sized weekday Filipino crowd in attendance.
Paras finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists, seven steals, and four blocks including highlights that included an alley-oop dunk in the second quarter.
The Philippines was already ahead, 31-7, after one quarter and the lead swelled to as high as 97 points.
"We also need to respect 'yung kalaban natin and respect the game," said Gilas coach Jong Uichico. "Kung tutuusin, kaya nilang gawin 'yung gusto nila pero you also have to play hard so it carries over into the next game which is tomorrow."
Uichico was referring to the match against Malaysia, which Gilas Pilipinas will play at 6 p.m. before an expected banner crowd of Filipinos and home fans at the MABA Stadium.
Myanmar was so outplayed it only scored three points in the second quarter.
