FIBA Asia president Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al-Thani of Qatar was reelected to a new five-year term during the Elective Congress on Friday in Doha, Qatar.
Among the 30 member national federations who cast their ballots was Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Sonny Barrios, representing SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan.
“We in SBP congratulate Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al-Thani and the newly elected Fiba Central Board for their new mandate,” said Barrios.
Also receiving a fresh mandate was Fiba Asia secretary general Hagop Khajirian of Lebanon.
Elected to the Central Board for the 2014-19 period were China’s Xin Lancheng (chairman), Sheikh Talal Faj Al-Sabah of Kuwait (1st vice president), Pang Yul of South Korea (2nd vice president), Quek Hiang of Singapore (treasurer), Mahmoud Magshoon of Iran (vice treasurer) and Noviantika Masution of Indonesia (women’s representative).
Named sub-zone representatives were Japan’s Mauro Mitsuro (East), Indonesia’s Eric Thohir (Southeast), Abhijith Sarker of Bangladesh (South), Abay Alpamyssov of Kazakhstan (Central), Mohd. Hobesh Al Marri of Qatar (Gulf) and Mudar Maidoub of Jordan (West).
The Fiba Asia Central Board finalized its decision on the hosting rights for the 2015 Fiba Asia calendar, including the 28th FIBA Asia Championship and 26th FIBA Asia Championship for Women, the two events which serve qualifiers for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
China was awarded hosting rights to both events, while Bangalore, India won the right to host the 4th Fiba Asia U16 Championship and Jakarta the 4th Fiba Asia U16 Championship for Women
